tomorrow will be filled with My Little Pony cupcakes (must be lemon, must have pink frosting with purple sprinkles - when did she get so opinionated?), giggling kindergarten girls in party dresses, a gift of ballet lessons with her favorite teacher, a fulfilled request for dinner at the Rainforest Café (lord give me strength) and cards and calls from relatives far and near.
we called her Grace because I needed a lot of the stuff to make it through a truly difficult pregnancy. I was so depressed and so ill that we worried she’d be colicky or weak or premature, but she arrived right on time, and looking like a rose. she was alert and precocious from the first, latching on perfectly right away (a relief after the struggle to nurse my firstborn), grasping me with her tiny perfect hand and (I swear) cutting her eyes up at me as if to say “I’m here, Mother, and I know what I’m doing.”
I am daily amazed at her self-confidence (where did it come from? not from me), her imagination, her fierce determination to master anything she decides to undertake (not me either - i’m a giver-upper), her brilliant color sense (i brag, but you’ve seen her work), her goofy sense of humor, her curiosity (”Mommy, do flies have toes?”).
happy birthday to my stinky princess. I couldn’t have dreamed up a more perfect girl than the one we got.

Comment by beki November 28, 2006 @ 1:40 pmOh, I’m going to cry. Aren’t these birthday milestones bittersweet? My baby turns three on Saturday and I’m planning her party as we speak. I can’t believe how fast three years has gone by.

Since we aren’t having anymore kids, you can be my surrogate daughter, okay? Because you are perfectly lovely (and artistic. let’s not forget that Very Important Fact).

Comment by DeeDee November 28, 2006 @ 4:42 pmHappy Birthday, Grace! You have a name that’s special to me too. My very beautiful and wonderful Nanna’s name was Beatrice Grace and we gave our daughter Grace as a middle name, after her.
