so we put the kids to bed a bit early last night and headed down to our little craft space to exercise our creative muscles. The Artiste is working on a comic and I putzed around with fabric. I like these little pillows; remember this one? They’re my baby gift du Jour, so if you’re in a family way and I know you - surprise!
anyway, we lost track of time (that’s what you get when you have a musician and an artist living together - punctuality? what that?) and it was midnight before we wrapped things up. yawwwwn. today will be a Homeschool Lite®.
that’s okay, though, because we got a lot done yesterday. My kindergarten girl started her new math book, the 2nd grader did 2 spelling lessons and we read aloud from our history book about Ceres and Proserpine.
then we did some collage work on their previously-painted canvas:

leaves were cut from interesting patterns - I’ll have to take a close-up ’cause they found some fun textures in my old stack of magazines.
today we’ll do a little grammar and work on some memorization. They’re learning this poem for November, and every time we read it I want to build a fire in the fireplace and bake up something delicious…
The Mist and All
by Dixie Willson
(to be read slowly and quietly)
I like the fall
The mist and all
I like the night owl’s lonely call
And wailing sound
Of wind around
I like the gray
November day
And dead, bare boughs that coldly sway
Against my pane
I like the rain
I like to sit
And laugh at it
And tend my cozy fire a bit
I like the fall
The mist and all
see what I mean?
now go enjoy your tuesday ~

That’s a great poem–so atmospheric. Wow, I really need to read more poetry. It’s pathetic that I’ve read three poems this year, all posted on other people’s blogs…
And what a gorgeous picture of your girl!
Comment by Jen November 7, 2006 @ 5:18 pmLovely poem. And great art, kiddos.
Look at her in that photo. What a beauty she is!
Comment by Alicia A. November 7, 2006 @ 6:09 pmYour kids are adorable… and their paintings are lovely!
Comment by Bee November 8, 2006 @ 8:30 amoh, i like that poem. much, MUCH better than that two roads divereged in yellow wood joke that, somehow, society decided to take seriously. but that’s typical for americans, isn’t it? hear something that’s a joke a take it seriously.
anyway.
love the kids’ trees. those are beautiful.
Comment by capello November 8, 2006 @ 10:23 amI was overwhelmed yesterday. Seriously. O-ver-whelmed. But reading that poem (as a break from my overwhelming check writing and paper pushing) gave me cause to breath - slowly - and fully - for the first time in the whole day. So thanks for that, my friend.
And your pillow is so cute I *almost* wish I was in a family way. But thank god I’m not.
Comment by laeroport November 8, 2006 @ 11:01 amStupid bloglines: I didn’t see this post until today. Great poem! Your kids are learning some great stuff! What a good teacher you are — very admirable.
Comment by amy h November 8, 2006 @ 11:13 amAs you can see from this being my third comment in a row, I’m a little behind in my blog reading.
Now that I’m more in touch with my artistic side, I’d rather create than sleep. When I get in the groove time really gets away from me (hence the lack of posting lately), but I have to make myself go to bed. Thank goodness for coffee.
I just LOVE your kiddo’s collages. Lily and I primed canvases the other night to do a little art. Maybe tonight we’ll do some painting, or collage.
Comment by beki November 8, 2006 @ 2:46 pmHmm. ALMOST worth getting knocked up for, that cushion.
